Lipedema

A deeper look at a misunderstood chronic adipose tissue disorder

Understanding Lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic, progressive condition characterized by the abnormal and disproportionate accumulation of fat, commonly affecting the legs, hips, buttocks, however arms and abdomen can be involved as well. This fat is often painful, resistant to diet and exercise, and accompanied by swelling, tenderness, easy bruising, and a feeling of heaviness.

Lipedema primarily affects women and is frequently triggered or worsened by hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Because it is often mistaken for obesity or lymphedema, many individuals live for years without an accurate diagnosis or effective treatment.

Comprehensive Lipedema Diagnosis and Testing

At our clinic, we specialize in recognizing and treating lipedema with a whole body, inflammation informed approach. Proper diagnosis is critical, as lipedema requires a different strategy than traditional weight loss or edema management.

Our providers conduct a thorough clinical evaluation that includes medical history, symptom patterns, physical examination, and assessment of contributing factors such as hormonal imbalance, inflammation, connective tissue disorders, and metabolic dysfunction. We also screen for common coexisting conditions including MCAD, insulin resistance, and lymphatic impairment.

Inflammation, Food Sensitivities, and Lipedema

Inflammation plays a central role in lipedema progression and symptom severity. Many individuals with lipedema experience heightened immune reactivity, food sensitivities, and mast cell involvement that can worsen pain, swelling, and fat tissue dysfunction.

To better understand each patient’s inflammatory drivers, we may recommend advanced testing such as the Mediator Release Test (MRT). MRT identifies specific food and chemical triggers that provoke inflammatory responses, allowing us to reduce immune activation that can aggravate lipedema symptoms.

Personalized Management Plans

Lipedema care must be individualized. There is no one size fits all solution, which is why we focus on building sustainable, personalized plans that support symptom relief, tissue health, and long term quality of life. Management plans may include:

Trigger Identification and Anti Inflammatory Nutrition

Using MRT results, we implement the LEAP protocol, a structured oligoantigenic anti inflammatory eating plan. This approach emphasizes foods you can enjoy while reducing immune and inflammatory burden.

Hormonal, Metabolic, and Nutritional Support

Targeted supplementation and medical therapies may be recommended to support hormone balance, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and address insulin resistance or metabolic dysfunction when present.

Lymphatic and Lifestyle Support

We provide guidance on movement, compression, nervous system regulation, and daily practices that support lymphatic flow and reduce symptom flares. Stress management and nervous system support are also key components of lipedema care.

The focus is always on what you can have. You are actively involved in choosing foods and strategies that fit your life, improving adherence, confidence, and long term success.

 Lipedema FAQs

  • Lipedema is a rare disorder that affects adipose (fat) tissue, almost exclusively in women. It is marked by an uneven but symmetrical accumulation of fat in the legs, hips, and buttocks, and sometimes in the abdomen and arms, while sparing the hands, feet, and neck. This fat tissue is resistant to weight loss and exercise, often causing significant discomfort and impacting daily life. The condition commonly appears during major hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

  • Any type of physician can diagnose lipedema but it is most beneficial to consult a healthcare provider who is knowledgeable about lipedema for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

  • Common symptoms of lipedema include disproportionate fat deposits, tenderness or pain in affected areas, easy bruising, hypermobility, and difficulty losing weight in those areas despite diet and exercise. It's important to note that there are many symptoms and they vary greatly between stages, types, and individuals.

  • Services will be determined by the patient's goals. We are a full service lipedema clinic that will also support comorbidities in diagnosis, referrals (PT, vascular, ultrasound, labs, etc can be run through insurance) prescriptions (compression, pumps, prescription drugs, can be ran through insurance), pre and post op care, genetic testing, nutrition guidance, and more.

  • Some of the treatments for lipedema include conservative measures such as compression garments, manual lymphatic drainage, specialized exercises, and lifestyle modifications. In some cases, surgical options like liposuction may be considered. Dr. Rodriguez is not a surgeon, however she can make recommendations and referrals.

  • Currently, there is no cure for lipedema, but many of its symptoms can be managed effectively with appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes.

  • No, lipedema is different from obesity. Lipedema involves abnormal fat distribution that is resistant to diet and exercise, whereas obesity is a general excess of body fat.
