Lymphedema
A deeper look at a chronic lymphatic system disorder
Understanding Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling caused by impaired lymphatic drainage. It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also involve the abdomen, chest wall, head, neck, or genital region. The swelling occurs when lymph fluid accumulates in tissues due to damage, obstruction, or dysfunction within the lymphatic system.
Lymphedema may be classified as primary, meaning it is caused by congenital or genetic abnormalities of the lymphatic system, or secondary, meaning it develops after surgery, radiation, infection, trauma, or cancer treatment. Over time, untreated lymphedema can lead to tissue fibrosis, heaviness, discomfort, skin changes, and increased risk of infection. Because swelling can have many causes, lymphedema is often misdiagnosed or dismissed in its early stages, delaying proper intervention and management.
Comprehensive Lymphedema Diagnosis and Evaluation
At our clinic, we approach lymphedema with a whole body, inflammation informed perspective. Accurate diagnosis is essential, as lymphedema management differs significantly from general fluid retention or weight related swelling.
Our providers conduct a thorough clinical evaluation that includes detailed medical history, symptom progression, and physical examination. We assess contributing factors such as chronic inflammation, connective tissue integrity, venous health, metabolic dysfunction, and coexisting conditions including lipedema, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, or mast cell activation.
When indicated, we may provide referrals for imaging studies, vascular assessment, etc. to help guide appropriate management. We may also work with pneumatic compression providers such as Tactile Medical or LymphaPress when clinically appropriate to support lymphatic drainage as part of a comprehensive care plan.
Inflammation, Immune Health, and Lymphedema
Inflammation plays a significant role in lymphatic dysfunction. Chronic immune activation can impair lymphatic flow, contribute to tissue changes, and increase swelling severity.
Many individuals with lymphedema also experience underlying inflammatory triggers, food sensitivities, or mast cell involvement that can worsen symptoms. To better understand each patient’s inflammatory burden, we may recommend advanced testing such as the Mediator Release Test (MRT). Identifying food and chemical triggers allows us to reduce immune activation and support healthier lymphatic function.
Personalized Management Plans
Lymphedema care requires individualized, sustainable strategies. Our goal is to reduce swelling, protect tissue health, and improve quality of life through conservative, evidence informed support. Management plans may include:
Trigger Identification and Anti Inflammatory Nutrition
Using MRT results when indicated, we implement structured anti inflammatory nutrition strategies designed to reduce immune burden while supporting overall metabolic health.
Hormonal, Metabolic, and Nutritional Support
Targeted supplementation and medical therapies may be recommended to reduce systemic inflammation, support vascular and connective tissue health, and optimize metabolic function when underlying dysfunction is present.
Lymphatic and Lifestyle Support
We provide guidance on compression therapy, movement strategies, manual lymphatic support referrals, skin care, infection prevention, and nervous system regulation. Daily practices that promote lymphatic circulation and tissue resilience are central to long term management.
The focus is always on practical, realistic strategies that empower you to participate actively in your care.

Lymphedema FAQs
-
Lymphedema is chronic swelling caused by impaired lymphatic drainage. When the lymphatic system cannot properly move fluid through the body, fluid accumulates in tissues, leading to persistent swelling and potential tissue changes.
-
Lipedema involves abnormal fat accumulation that is often painful and hormonally influenced, while lymphedema is caused by fluid buildup due to lymphatic dysfunction. Some individuals may have both conditions, which requires careful evaluation and tailored management.
-
Symptoms may include persistent swelling in one or more limbs, heaviness, tightness of the skin, reduced flexibility, recurrent infections, thickening of the skin, or discomfort that worsens throughout the day.
-
Diagnosis is based on a detailed clinical evaluation including medical history, physical examination, and assessment of contributing conditions.
-
Yes. Chronic inflammation and immune activation can impair lymphatic flow and worsen swelling. Identifying and reducing inflammatory triggers may help support lymphatic function and symptom management.
